Copy-Paste Fail

Know what they’ve got in common Reader?

They fail my Copy-Paste Test.

If I can copy your social media bio, or an opening line of your sales page, or your newsletter description, and paste it into someone else’s business and it still makes sense…. it’s too bland.

When you find a disappointingly beige phrase or sentence, you have three options:

  1. Get specific - add detail, aim for a narrower appeal, stop trying to make it work for everyone.
  2. Get colourful - keep the meaning the same but swap out words for something more playful, or unusual to give a flavour of your personality.
  3. Delete - soooooooo often there’s beige, bland, filler at the top of key pages. Hit delete and instantly upgrade the quality of the copy.

You don't need to do this with every piece of text. Focus on the key pieces that need to work hardest for your business - usually that’s the top of Home, About, Sales, Lead Magnet pages, and bios.

This email is inspired by a Substack Live I took part in last Friday:

'Build connection' 🥱😫 You've probably heard/read that basic marketing advice one or two trillion times. It's true - but also not at all helpful - because HOW, how are we supposed to do that Reader??? How do we connect human-to-human without feeling over-exposed? Most of us imagine it as a sliding scale: At the cold and concrete end of the scale, people present a highly polished, professional version of themselves. At the TMI end, they share every messy detail of their lives. And we feel like...

I never know how to introduce these, Reader I think it's reasonable to assume my subscribers would like the opportunity to check out content I've co-created with other business owners, so I feel good about the idea of sending this email out. But then trying to write it - urgggh - 'here's a bunch of stuff you might like' feels odd. Anyway..... Yesterday, while I was running boring domestic errands, someone bought a strategy session with me - which means I made £297 while loading groceries in my car (not quite making millions while sipping cocktails on a beach, but close enough). I'd like this to be a super-smug email about how having a super-duper sales page means your website can do all the hard work for you but...... ...the person buying the session had to message me before they could buy because there were no dates available on...
