Too personal?

'Build connection' 🥱😫

You've probably heard/read that basic marketing advice one or two trillion times.

It's true - but also not at all helpful - because HOW, how are we supposed to do that Reader???

How do we connect human-to-human without feeling over-exposed?

Most of us imagine it as a sliding scale:

At the cold and concrete end of the scale, people present a highly polished, professional version of themselves.

At the TMI end, they share every messy detail of their lives.

And we feel like we have to choose where on the scale to plonk ourselves.

But that’s not how it works.

It’s not a straight line scale.

It’s a 5D graph (I don’t actually think that’s a thing 🤷‍♀️...so maybe imagine some kind of mixing desk with five knobs you can twiddle).

You can vary:

  1. How often you share - 24/7 vs occasional glimpses.
  2. When you share - live as it happens, or later, after you’ve had time to reflect.
  3. Who has access - everyone online, your newsletter list, or a private paid group.
  4. How much detail you share - is it a minute-by-minute recap of every aspect, or highlights of one particular area of your life?
  5. How deep you go - surface-level facts or real emotional honesty.

Imagine all five dials turned up to the max…

You’re wearing a bodycam, streaming your every move to Instagram Live, narrating your inner thoughts and feelings as you broadcast every detail of your life to the public. 😱😱😱 (It’s not even Halloween yet, and I’m hitting you with horror stories!)

Building connection doesn’t have to be like that.

You can adjust any or all of the five variables to offer glimpses of yourself, like….

  • A once-a-year behind-the-scenes reflection you email only to paying members.
  • An occasional newsletter that shares a story from your weekend.
  • An Instagram story sharing a snapshot of your day but only available for 24 hours.

There’s no “right” level of vulnerability - just keep twiddling those five knobs until you find a configuration that comfortably fits your energy, values, and boundaries right now.

Let me know if:

  1. This is helpful - because if it is, I’ll turn it into a blog post
  2. You’ve got any questions - I’ll reply (and your qus will help me make that blog post better)

P.S. Coming this weekend for All Access Passholders - a behind-the-scenes journal I’ve been writing this week about my work, my life, and how the two smoosh together.

P.P.S. This email was inspired by a Q&A day Voxer interaction. The next Q&A day for Passholders is Tuesday 28th October. Join now so you can get your invite, and you can ask me anything.

I never know how to introduce these, Reader I think it's reasonable to assume my subscribers would like the opportunity to check out content I've co-created with other business owners, so I feel good about the idea of sending this email out. But then trying to write it - urgggh - 'here's a bunch of stuff you might like' feels odd. Anyway..... September 2025 calendar on colorful abstract background

Yesterday, while I was running boring domestic errands, someone bought a strategy session with me - which means I made £297 while loading groceries in my car (not quite making millions while sipping cocktails on a beach, but close enough). I'd like this to be a super-smug email about how having a super-duper sales page means your website can do all the hard work for you but...... ...the person buying the session had to message me before they could buy because there were no dates available on...

Pile of fresh, earthy potatoes with dirt specks.

Little diced potatoes roasted in garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil is a solid favourite in this house Reader. And every time I cook them, Every Time, I'll sneakily pop a piece of fresh-from-the-oven potato right into my mouth. Every Time. It hurts so much. I try to be patient and wait. I wave the potato around in the air to cool it down. But my reward system (like everyone else's) fires faster and louder than my pain-warning system. And my brain also throws in a little bit of optimism bias,...
