Just as with any other domestic project, I was less than 50% through cleaning the sofa when my initial enthusiasm wore off and I decided I didn’t want to do it anymore Reader 🙄 I'd been so excited to use my new upholstery cleaning machine. And initially watching the suds shoot out, then the dirty liquid get sucked back up again was entertaining enough to keep me going… and then suddenly it wasn’t. Normally at this juncture, I would cry and wait for my husband to rescue me with tea, sympathy, words of reassurance, and a helping hand to get me back on track. But he’d gone away for the weekend. It was just me. I had three options: A: Stop where I was…. with half the cushions a slightly different colour to the others. B: Push through the physical tiredness, hand cramps, and mental boredom….which would result in a bit of a botched job, and I might start hating the sofa so much I’d feel sad every time I sat on it. C: Take a break and come back to it the next day. I went with option C, and the next day it took way less time to finish the job than I thought it would. If there’s a project you’re tired of right now, what’s your best option? Sometimes it will be best to just stop and walk away. Other times it’ll be necessary to push through to get it done. But often a nap, coffee break, or a few days break can be all that’s needed to make the project appealing again. P.S. Marketing Gameplan Focus Week gets started on Monday. I really wanted to show you before and after photos so you can say ‘wow what a great job you did’ but also I don’t want anyone to see how gross the 8-years-old-and-never-been-cleaned sofa looked, so here’s a photo of it after the cleaning was done, but before I figured out which cushions went where. |

What if Star Wars didn’t happen Reader? I’m aware that Star Wars didn’t happen - that it’s not a film based on a true story. But what if George Lucas didn’t make the Star Wars films? Son#1 and I are watching Light & Magic, a Disney+ series about the history of George Lucas’ special effects production company, and at the end of an episode Son#1 had a question for me: If George Lucas hadn’t made the Star Wars films, would the special effects ideas and progress that film generated have been lost...
You know how sometimes when you want to learn how to do a thing, it’s helpful to watch someone else do it, and even better if you can watch a replay in slow motion, Reader This newsletter is a copywriting-equivalent of a slo-mo action shot. I had an idea for a new free thing - blog post, video, PDF - I’m not sure yet, but a free thing. I know who it’s for, I know how it’s going to help them, and I know roughly what the content will include. So this morning, aided by coffee, I started playing...
Did you ever have a school science lesson with a Van de Graaff generator Reader? Or the more child-friendly static electricity demo of rubbing a balloon on your jumper and using it to make your hair stick on end? You know that slightly uncomfortable fizzy feeling when the air (or balloon) is ever so slightly charged? Sometimes, our business can feel like that. A situation, a decision, or an idea can feel uncomfortably charged, loaded, fizzy. And that can make it hard to choose between...
