Look for these 3 problems - Lessons learned from 10 years and 100+ websites

Wondering if your website could be working harder for your business Reader?

If you're putting in the effort to let people know you exist, it's only fair that your website does some of the marketing work for you once those people arrive in your online home.

Over the last 10 years, I have worked with 100s of business owners, helping them get more subscribers, leads, and sales from their website.

Here are the top 3 problems I find:

1. It’s not easy for people to buy
Some people arriving on your website are ready to buy.

They know they have a problem, they’re ready to invest in a solution, and they want to quickly be able to see what you offer and how to get started.

Yes, it’s important to have an About page and lead magnets and ways to warm your audience up. But don’t forget the Ripe & Readies.

Look at your website from their point of view and check it’s easy for them to get the buying process started.

2. The front door doesn’t match the hallway
When I review someone’s website, I start with their social media, YouTube videos, or podcast - wherever they tend to be discovered by new people.

I’m looking for how well the whole picture goes together.

When I consume the free content, what do I think they sell, and who do I think they work with? Does this match their social bios? And does it all make sense when I arrive on their website, or am I doing a double-take wondering, ‘wait, you sell what?’ as I stare in disbelief at a sales page for something totally unexpected.

3. They disappeared
Not the website. The website is still there. It’s a functional website with all the pages it needs and buttons that work.

But the business owner is nowhere to be seen.

No photographs. No personality. No connection. And this is a problem.

If you’re involved in the delivery of your offer - coaching, consulting, group program, teaching materials, done-for-you services, done-together services - if you’re a big part of what you sell, then your website visitors want to know, like and trust you, before they shuffle towards the ‘buy’ or ‘book a call’ buttons.

Any of these a problem for your website?

What if Star Wars didn’t happen Reader? I’m aware that Star Wars didn’t happen - that it’s not a film based on a true story. But what if George Lucas didn’t make the Star Wars films? Son#1 and I are watching Light & Magic, a Disney+ series about the history of George Lucas’ special effects production company, and at the end of an episode Son#1 had a question for me: If George Lucas hadn’t made the Star Wars films, would the special effects ideas and progress that film generated have been lost...

A sloth hangs upside down on a branch.

You know how sometimes when you want to learn how to do a thing, it’s helpful to watch someone else do it, and even better if you can watch a replay in slow motion, Reader This newsletter is a copywriting-equivalent of a slo-mo action shot. I had an idea for a new free thing - blog post, video, PDF - I’m not sure yet, but a free thing. I know who it’s for, I know how it’s going to help them, and I know roughly what the content will include. So this morning, aided by coffee, I started playing...

Did you ever have a school science lesson with a Van de Graaff generator Reader? Or the more child-friendly static electricity demo of rubbing a balloon on your jumper and using it to make your hair stick on end? You know that slightly uncomfortable fizzy feeling when the air (or balloon) is ever so slightly charged? Sometimes, our business can feel like that. A situation, a decision, or an idea can feel uncomfortably charged, loaded, fizzy. And that can make it hard to choose between...
