Marketing Is Awful Playlist

This feels pointless.

I can’t keep this up.

I just really don’t wanna.

Even after 10 years of running this business, I still get the Marketing Is Awful Playlist looping through my brain occasionally.

Are you familiar with the tunes Reader?

When those thoughts run wild, I get a strong impulse to do something radical and drastically overhaul my business (when what I really need is a snack and a nap).

I’m grateful for every time that wave of Marketing Anxiety has washed over me, because when a mentoring client or All Access Passholder has sent a message expressing those same thoughts, I’m in a much better position to help them.

Sometimes they do need to make big changes.

But often, with some gentle exploration and experimentation, I’ve helped business owners rediscover a joy for their marketing by making relatively small tweaks.

My new blog post, When Marketing Feels Like A Crappy Thankless Chore, includes 4 questions to ask yourself if marketing and selling feel unsustainable, uncomfortable, or completely bloody pointless - free blog post.

Use it now, or save it somewhere safe for the next time your brain plays the Marketing Is Awful Playlist on repeat.

P.S. Got a sales page that you think could be performing better - book a Copy Review here.

P.P.S. I’ve just booked myself into two different art classes for later this month. I’m sure Future Laura will appreciate it after she's attended, and retreated to the safety of the sofa…..but right now I’m very much in the throes of ‘what the fudge did you do that for?!?!?!’ Soothe me by telling me about the last bold thing you signed your Future Self up for.

LEGO Botanicals - that’s the only thing I’ll be scouring the Internet for at the end of November. I want to expand my collection beyond this one lonely cactus, so I will happily spend some time and energy looking for a good deal on those. But besides my love of the little construction brick, this year I’m intentionally opting out of Black Friday. I won’t be selling my own Black Friday offers. I (almost certainly) won’t be promoting other people’s Black Friday offers. And I’ll avoid emails and...

For me, my clients, and I suspect you too Reader, making the sale isn't the end goal - it's the beginning of a longer-term relationship. And that can make selling feel awkward. We don't want to start our new client relationship by being pushy and manipulative. But if we're too humbly-mumbly about what we offer, the client relationship might never get a chance to start at all. In the Summer, I entered a Doom Spiral about this exact dilemma, then pulled myself out of it with a cup of tea, a...

As each business owner made the most of their 30-second opportunity to introduce themselves to the room, I was eyeballing the door and wondering if I could shuffle out unnoticed. The rising panic made the right words elusive. Gosh darn it, Laura, you should’ve anticipated this and come prepared. You had a 3-hour car journey to rehearse this! I have no recollection of the words that eventually tumbled out of my mouth, but I’m pretty certain it wasn’t a pithy one-liner encapsulating my...
