Wobby

At the end of a long and tiring day, my brain told me to turn off the TV and draw a duck.

I know better than to argue with my brain, Reader - there would be no sleep until I had followed the inspiration.

So I did.

One day, I would like to illustrate my blog posts and newsletters consistently, with drawings that clearly communicate something, and are in a style that is recognisably mine.

But for now, I am playing around, drawing animals, weather icons, and whatever else I feel like attempting.

Most of the time I keep them to myself. Occasionally, I plonk them into a newsletter.

I have a long-term goal for my Laura Learns To Draw project - I can see how it maybe one day might possibly perhaps be part of my business.

But for now, it sits in a liminal space between work and hobby.

It’s a wobby.

Today I had a Voxer session with a client I’ve been working with for a few months. She is working on a creative side project only loosely connected with her business, and like my drawing, one day, maybe, it will be monetized in some way.

Another wobby.

Let’s normalize the wobby (it’s OK - you don’t have to call it that).

To make space for something that may or may not one day generate money, but even if it doesn’t, it’s a totally valuable and worthy way to invest our time and energy anyway and kinda counts as work, but is also as fun as a hobby.

I am here for your 'this is my wobby' replies.

P.S. Want to borrow this email format/topic/idea for your own newsletter? Go for it, and please include a line that says something like 'inspired by this week's Comfy Business Newsletter' - and include that link.

  • do what you’re already doing, but better (more leads and sales from the marketing effort you’re investing)
  • experiment with a work-hobby

or any combination of those things…..

Do you keep track of what you’ve done, not just what you need to do Reader? A to-done list…. or even a ta-dah list if you’re feeling exuberant. I’ve done it for short periods when my inner voice has been particularly savage and I needed to feel better about what I was doing with my time. But it hasn’t been a habit of mine. It felt like too much of a faff to do The Thing and then write down that I had done The Thing. A few weeks ago, Son#2 began attending a farm-based day centre as part of his...

Yesterday, as I was a couple of hours into working on a new tool I’m excited about, I started to feel Not Good, Reader My chest felt tight, so I took off my bra (even though it was more than five hours before bra-off-o-clock), but I still felt like my lungs were being crushed. Then I realised my tongue was rammed hard up against the roof of my mouth - just like it is when I’m really stressed. I was focusing so hard on the thing I was excited about, I was holding my breath. So I looked it up,...

Way, way back in 2007, as a young mum with two boys under 2, my life was revolutionized by being able to order my groceries online and have them delivered to my house. Honestly, it was life-changing. Because we live by the coast and away from major towns, we had a very small number of supermarket chains to choose from... well we had one to choose from. One. Only one of the major brands would deliver to our area at that time. So we 'chose' them, and happily shopped with them for the next 18...
