If 'do social media' feels compulsory but crappy

If doing social media is the least fun part of business owner life, you are not alone Reader

It's one of the most common problems I hear from subscribers, Passholders, and clients.

They feel like social media takes up too much of their precious time, energy and headspace, and they're not sure it's worth the effort, but it can feel compulsory - how else would potential clients find out you exist 🤷‍♀️?

This week Erin Kelly (co-founder of the course platform MemberVault) is hosting the Grow Your List Without Social Media Summit (affiliate link).

It’s a collection of 12 speakers (including me) talking about strategies they’ve used to grow their audience, without relying on social media.

All the content unlocks tomorrow, and is available to listen through the 13th.

If you want to buy a Pass to keep access to the content beyond the 13th, it’s $19.

Register here.

P.S. 3 other things that can help you reduce or avoid using social media in your marketing:

  • The 90-Day MAP - A new 1-1 service to create a Marketing Action Plan that helps you grow your audience, nurture your subscribers, and generate leads and sales, in ways that feel comfortable and manageable to you (£97 until 1st April, then £297)
  • The Social Media Obligation Buster - 7 questions about the role social media does/can/should play in your business (free blog post)
  • The Connection Project - An online journal about what I’m doing to grow my email list in 2025 (£7)

What do these three have in common Reader? Lots of similarities, right? Do you know how they're different from each other? Their consistency. Just like ice creams, your marketing does not need to be a consistent consistency to be good. I consistently send the Comfy Business Newsletter at least once each week. But sometimes more often. And the day of the week it goes out varies a lot. I aim for the content to be consistently helpful to people who have a business that squishes in around a whole...

A red and white fire extinguisher sign on a concrete wall

Sometimes my job involves pissing my clients off, Reader The conversation (via Zoom, Voxer, or text) goes like this.... Client: I need to build my email list, but I don't want to run Facebook Ads Or Client: I want to get more people into my membership, but my last doors open/closed launch cycle flopped, and I don't want to do it again Or Client: I know I need to be marketing my business, but I hate creating content for social media. Or some other variation of: I need this outcome, but I...

a red and white striped barricade over a body of water

This just came up with a Marketing Action Plan client and it'd be great for an Ask Laura episode...but also it would be a really short episode, and it probably is easier to process and understand if you see it written down Reader. You know those 'This is for you if' and 'This is not for you if' lists that appear on sales pages sometimes.... They can help the reader understand if they're a good fit for the offer, and they can help turn away people who aren't a good fit. But sometimes they can...
